On the 5th of June 2024, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in collaboration with Targeted Rights Initiative hosted a seminar to celebrate the “CITIZENSHIP WEEK” at De Youngsters International School located at Nima, Accra – Ghana.
Per the theme: “Children, Let’s Build Ghana Together” the goal of the seminar was to remind basic school pupils of their responsibilities as agents of change, and the role they can play to build a peaceful and a clean democratic Ghana: by promoting a free, fair, and peaceful election and clean environment.
Targeted Rights Initiative aimed to raise awareness among students and educators about the importance of digital security in today’s interconnected world and the basic tenets of online safety. Participants learned about common online threats, understanding these risks is crucial for safeguarding personal information and sensitive data.
Doreen Raheena Sulleyman, the Executive Director of Targeted Rights Initiative, drummed home the significance of protecting one’s privacy online. Attendees explored strategies to maintain privacy settings, avoid oversharing, and secure personal accounts. The seminar covered best practices for safe internet usage, such as avoiding the taking of explicit photos and videos of themselves. Avoiding the use of their mobile devices even in the bathhouse since their cameras could be hacked and their explicit photos could be accessed by unscrupulous people.
Students were encouraged to be responsible digital citizens. They discussed the impact of social media posts, cyberbullying prevention, and the importance of respectful online interactions. The participants were encouraged to be nice online to other users of the various platforms that they made use of in order to contribute to a safe online environment for all. The seminar provided valuable insights into online safety and cybersecurity. Participants left with practical knowledge to protect themselves and their digital identities.
