The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign that runs from November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to December 10th (Human Rights Day). This period is dedicated to raising awareness and acting to end violence against women and girls. The inception of this day was because Women’s rights activists successfully persuaded the United Nations to recognize November 25 as a day to combat gender-based violence. This date marked the 1960 assassination of the Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic under the orders of dictator Rafael Trujillo. Their story is memorialized in the 1994 historical fiction novel, In the Time of Butterflies by Julia Alvarez.
In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring the elimination of violence against women. Subsequently, on February 7, 2000, the UN formally designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The UN encourages partnerships with governments, international organizations, and NGOs to support this cause and raise public awareness annually on this date.
Targeted Rights Initiative (TRI), an NGO dedicated to advocating against gender-based violence both online and offline, is gearing up to leverage this period to shape public perception and drive meaningful change.
Awareness and Advocacy
During the 16 Days of Activism, TRI plans to host a series of events, including workshops, webinars, and community outreach programs. These events aim to educate the public about the prevalence of gender-based violence and the importance of taking a stand against it. By engaging with communities, TRI hopes to foster a culture of zero tolerance towards gender-based violence.
Social Media
In today’s digital age, social media is a powerful tool for advocacy. TRI will launch a social media campaign using the hashtags #speakup and #speakout to amplify voices and stories of survivors. The campaign will encourage individuals to share their experiences and support others, creating a ripple effect of awareness and solidarity.
Collaboration and Partnerships
TRI understands the importance of collaboration in driving change. During the 16 Days of Activism, TRI will partner with other NGOs and community organizations to host joint events and initiatives. These partnerships will help reach a wider audience and create a united front against gender-based violence.
The 30 Days Activism Campaign
Building on the momentum of the 16 Days of Activism, TRI is launching a 30 Days Activism Campaign against Gender-Based Violence. This extended campaign will continue to use the hashtags #speakup and #speakout to keep the conversation going and maintain public engagement.
The 30 Days Campaign will feature daily activities, including educational content, awareness campaigns, training sessions, and storytelling to encourage engagement, support, and empowerment. Others include online discussions, survivor stories. TRI will also host virtual events and webinars to provide a platform for experts and activists to share their insights and strategies for combating gender-based violence.
Shaping Public Perception
The ultimate goal of TRI’s campaigns is to shape public perception and create a society where gender-based violence is not tolerated. By raising awareness, providing support to survivors, and advocating for policy changes, TRI aims to create a safer and more equitable world for all. A world which is free from the strong grip of gender violence and harassment on social media.
Join the Movement
You can be a part of this important movement by participating in TRI’s events, sharing your stories, and supporting survivors. Together, we can make a difference and end gender-based violence once and for all. Together, we can create a world which is free from gender-based violence for all. A world where we will be safe to do explore without the thought of being harmed by anybody by virtue of our gender.
